Amazing 40 - Christ's resurrection to ascension

Part 2 Meaning of the sacrifice and resurrection revealed in Scripture

Day 26 Gen 15:9-18a, Lev 9:22-24, 2 Chr 7:1-3 Examples of sacrifices acceptance by God

Gen 15:9-18a Abraham sacrifice -  So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon."   10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.  12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."  17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram

Lev 9:22-24  Moses’ sacrifice at the ordination of Aaron -  Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down. 23 Moses and Aaron then went into the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. 24 Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.

2 Chr 7:1-3 Solomon’s sacrifice at dedication of temple -  When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. 2 The priests could not enter the temple of the LORD because the glory of the LORD filled it. 3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the LORD , saying,   "He is good; his love endures forever."

Day 27 Heb 9: 26-28,  Heb 10:11-14,  Heb 10: 18         Acceptance of Christ’s sin bearing sacrifice

Heb 9:26-28 - Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Heb 10: 11-14 -Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. 13Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, 14because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Heb 10:18 - And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

Day 28 Rev 5: 6-10              Worthy Is the Lamb

6Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9And they sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll  and to open its seals, because you were slain,  and with your blood you purchased men for God  from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,  and they will reign on the earth.”

Day 29   Is 52: 13-15, Is 53:10-12                   The Suffering and Glory of the Servant in Isaiah

Is 52: 13-15   See, my servant will act wisely;  he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.  14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him -   his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man   and his form marred beyond human likeness- 15 so will he sprinkle many nations,  and kings will shut their mouths because of him.  For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand.

Is 53:10-12  Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,     and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,  he will see his offspring and prolong his days,  and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.  11 After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied ;  by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,  and he will bear their iniquities.  12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,   and he will divide the spoils with the strong,  because he poured out his life unto death,  and was numbered with the transgressors.  For he bore the sin of many,  and made intercession for the transgressors.

Day 30   Ps 22      The Suffering and Glory of the Servant in Psalms

Ps 22:1-12  My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?     Why are you so far from saving me,     so far from the words of my groaning?     2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;   you are the praise of Israel.    4 In you our fathers put their trust;     they trusted and you delivered them.   5 They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.     7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads:  8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him,  since he delights in him."  9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you    even at my mother's breast. 10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God.     11 Do not be far from me,   for trouble is near and there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.  13 Roaring lions tearing their prey open their mouths wide against me. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax;   it has melted away within me.  15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,  and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;   you lay me in the dust of death.  16 Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet.  17 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.   19 But you, O LORD , be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly to help me. 20 Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs.  21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

Ps 22:22-31   I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. 23 You who fear the LORD praise him!  All you descendants of Jacob honor him!  Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. 25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.    26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him- may your hearts live forever!  27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,  28 for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.  29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;  all who go down to the dust will kneel before him- those who cannot keep themselves alive. 30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. 31 They will proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn- for he has done it.

Day 31 Ps 16:5-11              Holy One does not see decay

LORD , you have assigned me my portion and my cup;  you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;  surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;    even at night my heart instructs me.  8 I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.  9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.  11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Day 32   Ps 49:7-9, 15        Redeemed by the LORD

No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him-  8 the ransom for a life is costly,  no payment is ever enough- 9 that he should live on forever and not see decay……15 But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself.

Day 33      1 Cor 15:3-7, 20-28, 54-57    First Importance, First fruits

1 Cor 15:3-7 -For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

1 Cor 15:20-28 - But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 28When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

1 Cor 15:54-57 -When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
