Week 1 Introduction to Mark Chapter 1-4
The Ministry of Jesus
Mark opens with a profound truth:
The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:1
Who is this man called Jesus?
Mark tells us the Jesus he writes about is the Christ. And Mark tells us this Jesus is also Son of God!
Most of us know at least a few details of Jesus’ life. But how do we come to understand this gospel book?
To simplify, think of Jesus’ ministry in two components- His works and His words.
His Works
Miracles are a highlight of the gospels. They show us the scope of Jesus’ power. Make a list of Jesus’ miracles as you read.
Take note of His actions as well. Watch for events such as His baptism, temptation, way of life, and interactions with people.
His Words
Sermons, parables, proclamations certainly are important. Many Bible print the words of Christ in red to emphasis their importance.
Also watch His conversations, prayers, and responses to His followers and His opponents. In these we read revelations of truth from the Eternal one.
His Words and His works
As you carefully read, you will see Jesus in a new way. Together Jesus’ works and His words point to His absolute power and authority. Even when we don’t fully understand all of the deep truths revealed in the gospel, we are assured of the authenticity of Jesus’ message and the value of His ministry.
